Answer
Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger. Thank you, sister, for your good question and concern about Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam. Indeed, Hajj is a great ritual of Islam for which Allah Almighty has promised a great reward. So all Muslims who perform Hajj are ordained to do Hajj only for the sake of Allah and to achieve sincerity (ikhlas), Allah says in the Qur'an (And accomplish the pilgrimage and the visit for Allah.) (Al-Baqarah 2: 196) All Muslims performing Hajj are ordained to learn and follow rites of Hajj from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Jaber ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I heard the Prophet, on his mount, on the day of slaughtering (an-nahr) throwing the pebbles(jamarat) and saying "Learn your rites from me, as I do not know, I may not perform Hajj again." (Muslim) In his answer for your question, Dr. Sabry `Abdul-Ra'ouf, a prominent professor of fiqh at Al-Azhar University, stated, There is agreement among the jurists, without any controversy, that the muhrim, the Muslim in the state of Ihram, must neither use any kind of perfumes nor cut his hair or nails. As for shampoos, deodorants, and the like, they are not permissible during Ihram, as they are considered kinds of luxury and using ornaments, which is forbidden (haram) during Ihram. All perfumed products have the same rule of impermissibility. Hence, if a Muslim uses any of these products during Ihram, he/she is considered sinful and has to pay a ransom (fidyah), as he/she has done one of the impermissible acts (mahdhurat) during Ihram. But after Ihram a Muslim may use any of these products once again. Given the above, it is not permissible for a Muslim, man or woman, to use any perfumed products during Ihram including deodorants and shampoos. Allah knows best. |
