Dear brother, thank you very much for your question which emanates from a God-fearing heart, since it shows your commitment to da`wah, the basic duty of every Muslim. We hope great success in da`wah and call for Allah Almighty to accept your effort and abundantly reward you.

Indeed, a good daa`i (caller to Islam) should, first, comply with the rulings of Shari`ah to which he is calling people, as calling by conduct and behavior is much more effective than calling by voice.

Shedding light on the rules a good daa`i should follow, Dr. Hatem Al-Hajj, Dean of Shari`ah Academy of America,  stated,

All praise be to Allah,

1- The first advice is to observe Allah in all you say and do.

2- You should lower the wing of humbleness to your brothers and never disregard their counsel and advice... Consult them frequently!

3- Don’t answer any question unless you are very confident of the answer, and make it clear to your audience that they should not always expect spontaneous answers. Al-Mirwazi said that he heard Imam Ahmad several times saying, “I don't know”, even though he knew all of the opinions pertaining to the matter... (He probably was not sure which one is strongest.)

4- Don’t ever rule out the possibility that your opinion may be wrong except in yaqiniyat (matters of certainty).

5- Break your ego and feel your weakness, and beg Allah to show you the right path hundreds of times every day... You must observe your humility for you to deserve His mercy and guidance. Do not get too busy helping the people and have no time for your own purification...the time you spend alone in worship is essential for your relationship with Allah and it is like oxygen for your spirit.

6- Build solid credit before you start spending from it. The people will listen more to a daa`i whom they trusted and loved...and that takes time.

7- Social services to the community are essential for its cohesion and attachment to the masjid and Islam. Don’t underestimate that angle of da`wah.

8- One of the greatest fitnas for men is women... Be courteous but distant and make sure your reputation in this regard is spotless.

9- The people will love you if you take good care of their kids, and better yet, Allah will love you. If you can relate to the youth, investing in them has a much higher yield.

May Allah guide us to devotion and use us to better the conditions of this Ummah of the greatest daa`i Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Adhere always to his Sunnah.

Allah Almighty knows best.
