CAIRO – With prayers and speeches highlighting his teachings and traits of his character, mosques across the British city of Sheffield are planning to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).

“The most important part of Eid Milad Un-Nabi is focusing upon the character of the Prophet; on his teachings, sufferings, and how he forgave others,” reads a statement posted on the Madina Mosque.

“As well as recounting the Prophet's life, salutations and poetry in his praise are recited.”

The Council of Mosques in Sheffield will hold ceremonies to mark the Prophet’s birthday on Sunday January 20.

The Prophet’s birth falls on the 12th day of Rabi-ul-Awwal (the third month in the Islamic calendar).

This year, it is expected to fall on Thursday, January 24.

The celebrations will include prayers and recitation of verses of the Noble Qur’an.

Speeches will also be delivered by Muslim scholars about the Prophet’s life and traits of his character.

Many Muslims see the prophet’s birthday as an important time to learn about and reflect on Muhammad’s life.

Lectures and speeches are often recorded and published as podcasts.

Celebrations of the prophet’s birthday include stalls selling Islamic books, leaflets, clothing, prayer mats and other materials.

Britain is home to a Muslim community of nearly 2.5 million.
