CAIRO – Launching athletes’ marathon towards gold medals, the flag of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), along with the flags of 45 countries, were hoisted on Sunday, September 22, in Palembang, South Sumatra, to announce the opening of the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games.
"The Committee was prepared so that the execution of the opening is not a problem anymore," Ahmad Najib, the 4th Deputy Chairman of the Organizing Field of Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG), said in a press release published on the games official website.
Najib was talking about the opening ceremony of the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games event planned on Sunday evening.
Held at the Jaka Baring Main Stadium, the ceremony will include shows reflecting Indonesia arts, culture with Islamic overtones.
The event is expected to extend for 6 hours and will be opened at 16:00 am with a variety of local arts, choir, and marching band from Indonesia performing schools.
The games is expected to draw thousands of visitors who will follow games between athletes from 44 countries plus observer countries representatives.
After the official opening ceremony attended by President, and ISSF officials, heads of state and representatives of the State INAISGOC participants and organizers, athletes will be followed by a procession of participants, followed by a procession of flags.
Hosted by Palembang, South Sumatra, in Indonesia, the event features 13 different sports including, athletics, basketball, equestrian, fencing, football, handball, karate, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weightlifting.
A total 1,530 medal will be awarded to winners among 3,200 athletes and officials.
The organizing body for the event said that a special place of worship will be adjusted to match the number of participants.
Along with the mosques for the athletes and participants, organizers will also prepare a place of worship for the sports fans who will attend the games.
Held for the third time, the Islamic Solidarity Games is a multinational, multi-sport event which involves elite athletes of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
The Islamic Solidarity Games Federation (ISSF) is the organization that is responsible for the direction and control of the Islamic Solidarity Games.
The first event was held in 2005 in Saudi Arabia and there are currently 57 members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference. Non-Muslim citizens in the member countries are also allowed to take part in the Games.
A second event, originally scheduled to take place in October 2009 in Iran, and later re-scheduled for April 2010, was canceled after a dispute arose between Iran and the Arab World over the use of the term “Persian Gulf” rather than “Arab Gulf” in logos for the Games.
