PARIS – The opening of a mosque for homosexuals in France is inviting condemnations from the Muslim community for running counter against the Islamic teachings.

"This is an abuse of the definition of a mosque," Dalil Boubakeur, rector of the Grande Mosque in Paris, told FRANCE 24.

A mosque was opened in eastern Paris on Friday to be frequented by only homosexuals.

How Islam Views Homosexuality

The mosque founder, Ludovic Mohammed Zahed, argues that the building aims to break taboo issues in Islam, such as homosexuality.

He also insisted that his gay-friendly mosque, located at a Hindu temple, is the result of a modern interpretation of the Islamic teachings.

The homosexual also said that women will lead Friday prayers at the new mosque.

But his argument is rejected by Boubakeur, stressing that the mosque runs against the spirit of Islam.

"The mosques that are already there accept everyone, so creating one specifically for homosexuals is against the spirit of Islam," he said.

"Worshippers go to a mosque to worship God, they don’t go to demonstrate their sexuality."

France is home to a Muslim minority of six million, Europe's largest.

French Muslim leaders stressed that homosexuality is forbidden in Islam.

"Homosexuality is condemned in 13 verses of the Qur'an," Boubakeur told FRANCE 24.

"The only sexual relationship that is legitimate is between married men and women."

Boubakeur said the gay mosque would stand "outside the community".

"We do not point the finger at homosexuals, but we cannot give them credit to the point that they become recognized in our community," he told Reuters.

Abdallah Zekri, President of the National Observatory of Islamophobia, also condemned the move.

"We know that homosexual Muslims exist, but opening a mosque (for them) is an aberration," he told FRANCE 24.

Same-sex relationship and marriage are totally prohibited in Islam, Christianity and all divine religions.

Islam teaches that believers should neither do the obscene acts, nor in any way indulge in their propagation.

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexuality is not a sin, but considers homosexual intercourse as sinful.
