Students from Gatton and St Boniface schools team up to help the homeless.

CAIRO – Muslim and Christian students from two London religious schools have gathered hands to offer help those in need, getting a unique opportunity to share correct information about their faiths.

"This was a good opportunity to help the poor,” Aishah Khan, Gatton Primary in Tooting district in London Borough, told Your Local Guardian newspaper on Saturday, January 25.

"This is important because we need to give charity and it is not nice that some people have no homes," the nine-year-old Muslim student added.

Khan was speaking as she, along with her colleagues from Gatton, travelled to London with students from St Boniface Roman Catholic Primary to offer help to the needy.

Gatton makes an annual donation to Muslim Aid's Warm Hearst Campaign, which hands out non-perishable foods to people in London during the winter.

The visit to London is not the first event to gather students from both schools.

Last summer, students from St Boniface students visited Gatton to learn about Muslims and Islamic faith.

Welcoming them, Gatton students prepared an exhibition on the five pillars of Islam and spoke to contemporaries at St Boniface about their experiences.

The interfaith experience for students at such a young age was praised by Gatton’s headteacher Rifat Batool.

"This was an excellent opportunity for pupils of two faiths to unite for a common purpose - displaying positive partnership and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development," Batool said.

Britain is home to a sizable Muslim minority, estimated at nearly 2.5 million.

A recent report by the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex found that Muslims are the most likely of all groups to be identified with the concept of ‘Britishness.’

Last year, think tank Demo found that Muslims in the United Kingdom are more patriotic than the rest of population.

Responding to the statement “I am proud to be a British citizen”, 83% of Muslims said they are proud of being British.

The percentage came higher than average across the population which scored only 79%.
